News Flash: You Don't Need A Humidor To Keep Cigars Fresh

One of the biggest myths about cigars is that you need a fancy wooden box to keep your cigars properly humidified. While it's nice to have a humidor—whether it's a small desktop unit or a huge walk-in closet—it's simply not necessary.
Yes, cigars can be an expensive hobby, but for the beginner, the budget conscious or those simply unwilling to shell out $50 or $100 or $10,000 for a box, all you need is a container that seals and effective humidification. The Interweb will tell you all you need to know about converting a Tupperware container or Igloo cooler into a cheap and 100% sound storage solution for a few dozen sticks or multiple full boxes of cigars.

For those who purchase singles in small quantities, or anyone looking for an easy way to tote some cigars on a trip, the picture above shows how simple it can be. Nearly every cigar store in the world will hand over your purchase in a ziplock-style baggie. If they don't, you can probably find a spare one in your kitchen.

The key is humidification. There are lots of options,  but the good folks at Boveda make it as simple and effective as it gets. Just drop one of their little disposable humidifier packs into your bag o' cigars and you get two-way control: the pack not only puts out humidity, but absorbs any excess so your cigars can't get soggy. Just keep it in a cool place away from direct sunlight and you have a safe place for your sticks that will last for months before you need to replace the Boveda pack. And since they're available from as low as 65% humidity, you can choose exactly how you like your cigars.

The best part: they're only $1.29 in packs of 10. So you can spend more of your money on cigars, and less on fancy storage.

It was helpful when you said to keep cigars out of direct sunlight. My sister and I want to look into getting our dad some cigars for his 60th birthday coming up in a couple of weeks, so I wanted to make sure we knew how to store them properly. We'll keep these tips in mind once we get the cigars.
